HUMAN DEGRADATION: a concert
For many years, the Tiger Lillies were one of the best-kept secrets in the London scene. The band, featuring falsetto singer and accordion player Martyn Jaques, was formed in 1989. The group, known for its black English humor, has since become a cult favorite.
The band’s early days were quite wild. Martyn Jaques, who lived above a striptease bar in London’s Soho district, trained independently to become an opera singer with a castrato-like voice – the perfect organ for the eerily beautiful, blasphemous and unthinkably strange songs (“surrealist pornography”) he performs, full of fantasy, poetry and magic. The Tiger Lillies’ music, featuring accordion, double bass and drums, is an incredible combination of cabaret, vaudeville and gypsy music. It is distinguished by Martyn Jaques’ unique performance – sometimes gruff and accusing, then suddenly gentle and melancholy.
